County Championship - 8th (W4, D18, L2)
Benson & Hedges Cup - Group Stage
NatWest Trophy - Final
John Player Special League - 13th
Captain - Clive Rice
Notts suffered cruel luck in the Final of the NatWest Trophy; having lost the County Championship on the penultimate ball of the last match in 1984, in 1985 they lost the Final of the NatWest Trophy on the last ball of the match!
Essex closed their innings on 280-2, lead by Brian Hardie with 110 and Graham Gooch with 91. In reply Notts were never quite up with the rate and at the start of the final over needed 18 to win. Derek Randall, with a characteristic flourish took 16 off Pringle but fell to a catch of the last ball.
In the County Championship, Notts found it difficult to get results with eighteen of the twenty-four fixtures ending in a draw. Four batters - Robinson, Rice, Randall and Chris Broad topped 1000 runs for the season with Randall leading the way with 2,151. In all, the side contributed fifteen centuries across the season.
The four matches won were away to Somerset when Peter Such took fiv e second innings wickets to help secure a nine wicket win; away again to Kent at Tunbridge Wells by four wickets; yet another away win at Lord's where Hadlee's 7-34 and a century from Randall saw Notts home by 5 wickets; the only home win of the season came when Derbyshire were asked to follow on and Nottinghamshire won by 10 wickets.
If the wins were by handsome margins, so too were the two defeats. Middlesex came to Trent Bridge and won by 10 wickets, a century from Wilf Slack and the bowling of Wayne Daniel and Norman Cowans proving decisive.
Glamorgan also won at Trent Bridge, by an innings and 11 runs. Although more truthfully, Rodney Ontong beat Notts; the South African all rounder finished with match figures of 5-39 and 8-67 amd scored 130 when Glamorgan batted!
Trent Bridge also hosted the Third Test of the Ashes summer. In keeping with many of the county games, this proved something of a run-fest - England made 456 (Gower 166) and Australia replied with 539, Graham Wood made 172 and Greg Ritchie 146; England were 196-2 when stumps were drawn.
At the end of the season, it was announced that Basharat Hassan has retired from first class cricket and the Club thanked him for his devoted service to the Club over 20 years. But his association with Notts CCC did not end there - 'Basher' joined the staff at Trent Bridge had filled many roles; he was elected as the Club’s President in February 2020, cementing a 50-year association with the Club. His first stint as President was severely curtailed by the Covid pandemic and he was re-elected for a further two years.
With the help of sponsors, the Club launched the Trent Bridge Juniors scheme to encourage younger members (ow the Junior Outlaws).
One of the highlights of the year was the official opening of the Larwood & Voce Stand and Tavern in the presence of Elsie Voce, Bill Voce's widow, and two of Harold Larwood’s daughters.
